Moebius Syndrome: The Soundtrack
by Gavin Fouche
The music of the Beatles may not have contained the hidden meanings or messages much speculated about, but Moebius Syndrome: The Soundtrack does! The music on this CD has been put together by a person with Moebius Syndrome for those with, as well as those without Moebius Syndrome.
All music contained on this audio CD has been compiled from songs whose lines, titles, or lyrics hold meaning to having, or the experience and attitude of having Moebius Syndrome in some way, shape or form. The cause of this rare disorder behind this rare disc order is still under speculation, but the effects of it are often a matter of close spectation.
So, like me, if you’ve ever felt that “you’re packing a suitcase for a place that none of us has been.” Or “you feel like no-one before”, just remember that “Every where you go you shout it, you don’t have to be shy about it.” Enjoy.
Pleasant listening!
Of Moebius And Meanings
Just The Way It Is - Bruce Hornsby & The Range
My name is Gavin Fouche and I have Moebius Syndrome, and that’s just the way it is. Nothing or no-one can change that, but if given an opportunity now, I wouldn’t want something or someone to. The Moebius is a part of me, it’s not all of me, but it’s helped to shape and define my life and the person I’ve become, for better or worse. “That’s just the way it is, somethings will never change.” But some people’s perceptions towards it CAN change.
Walk On - U2
So you have Moebius. “If your glass heart should crack, and for a second you turn back- be strong - walk on…” Life has lots more to throw at you, and you need to have your hands free in order to catch it. Moebius isn’t the worst thing in the world you know!
My Hope Is In You - Yousso N'Dour
When I was born, and probably also where I was born, differences and disabilities were frowned upon. If you weren’t white with ten fingers and ten toes then you weren’t part of society. Today people are much more open and accepting. We can give and teach so much to so many. “I want to watch your spirit touch the sky, so much more we can do!”
I think that because we are how we are, we are a lot closer to our humanity and what the human spirit really is capable of. That’s why other people learn from us when we aren’t even aware that we are teaching them anything.
Shiny Happy People - R.E.M
Just as I’ve never seen a depressed cat or a dog, I’ve never seen a person who can’t smile but yet isn’t able to laugh about it. We may not all be Beautiful People, and some of us may not even be Bright Young Things anymore, but our attitudes remain that of Shiny Happy People - laughing.
Light In Your Eyes - Sheryl Crow
“You’ve got to talk to the one who made you; you’ve got to talk to the one who understands; you’ve got to talk to the one who gave you all the light in your eyes…” I’ve always believed there’s a reason for me being like I am. I believe in God, and in times of difficulty I’ve always felt like there has been someone who knows and shares my troubles, even when I once thought I was alone in the world with Moebius. No-one could really tell me how to do things as only I could. But there was a voice in the wilderness whispering into my ear. After all, He’s the Designer, we’re just the models wearing His clothes.
Closer To Free - The Bodeans
“Everybody wants to live like they want to live, and everybody wants to love like they want to love, and everybody wants to be closer to free. Everybody needs respect –just a little bit- and everybody needs a chance once in a while…” Self-explanatory I think.
You Get What You Give - New Radicals
You’ve got the Moebius, but also the music in you!
Hold On Tight - Electric Light Orchestra
“When you get so down that you can’t get up; when you want so much but you’re all out of luck; when you’re so down-hearted and misunderstood- hold on tight to your dreams!”
Don’t Stop - Fleetwood Mac
“Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow, yesterday’s gone, yesterday’s gone” If things and people have hurt you in the past, forget about it! It’s just all gristle for the mill now, you’ve learnt from it. Take a sad song and make it better.
Go Your Own Way - Fleetwood Mac
For many years I wanted to be just like everyone else, trying to fit in at any cost. Now, I’m comfortable being me. Even though you are the same, you are also different. You have to allow for those differences while staying the same- all this will help you stay sane. You CAN go your own way!
Dignity - Deacon Blue
Don’t allow those pirates out there to scuttle your ship called Dignity. You have the right to sail full-speed ahead into the sunset, as does everyone else.
Your Mirror - Simply Red
Sometimes you have to adopt a tough attitude to adapt to a tough world, but… “It’s wrong, even the birds still sing their faithful song, and your beauty lies within you.” Just look in the mirror, baby! Don’t become a monster in order to defeat the monsters.
I’ve Just Seen A Face - The Beatles
Okay, I just had to squeeze the Beatles in here somewhere!
One - U2
“We’re one but we’re not the same, we’ve got to carry each other, we get to carry each other.” We’ve got to take time out sometimes from running the rat race and jog with the rest of the human race, at a steady pace.
If you strip us down to the core we are all just a collection of bones, tissue and blood. We are not so different to each other as we think.
At My Most Beautiful
No matter what or who we are, there’s always a time when we’re at our most beautiful. Being all we were meant to be. I think mine is when I make another person laugh or smile. I may not be able to smile myself, but I have the distinct ability to make others smile, and that is of far greater value to me.
Hands - Jewel
When I first heard this song it almost moved me to tears. Well okay, it actually did move me to tears – just don’t go spreading it around now. I interpreted some of the lyrics to literally be about hands, and it applied very snugly to my own situation and beliefs. I could’ve written this song but probably never would have!
Smile - Nat King Cole
Words and music by Charlie Chaplin. Even though his silent movie smiles are legendary in motion picture history, they shielded him from a troubled past. Born to an alcoholic father, and a well-meaning mother who spent most of her life in mental asylums, Chaplin grew up in late 19th century London’s poverty stricken East End, in and out of workhouses. Also no stranger to adversity, Nat King Cole suffered but survived segregation in 1950’s America. Losing much of his popularity with the advent of television, when disgusted fans discovered that the silken voice they had so enjoyed on the radio belonged to a black man! When there are clouds in the sky, you’ll get by if you just smile…Or laugh, in our case.
Grace - U2
…And when she walks on the street, you can hear the strings. Grace finds goodness in everything. Grace; it’s a name for a girl. It’s also a thought that could change the world.
God Put A Smile Upon Your Face - Coldplay
But he put mine in my heart.
Original Of The Species - U2
Of all the words we use to describe an unusual difference, words such as disabled, handicapped, challenged- none of them has ever to me been able to really describe what we are. Here’s two words I’d use – Limited Editions.
Every one of us is limited in one way or another, and some of us don’t even know our limits! But just like a limited edition book, movie, or album you’ll find in us Moebi (??) quirks and qualities that you will nowhere find on your average garden-variety smileable person. I can assure you of that!
I read somewhere the other day, that those in the know believe that the formation of the human larynx with it’s unique ability to vocalize sounds, could’ve started out as a deformity in early humans. So just who’s running the asylum anyway? This is my cue to sow my wild oats so that the future packers at Pick ‘n Pay are no longer able to put the cheese spread on the top shelf where I can’t reach! What is the difference between normal and abnormal? The only difference, I think anyway, is in our minds. If we all ran around naked and screamed at the top of our lungs that would be normal, that would be what our society took for normality. We are all different but fundamentally the same. Our attitudes determine our altitudes in life. As the man says, “Everywhere you go you shout it,” but “You don’t have to be shy about it.” There’s a thought.
